  3. "Given enough power," Peter said, "we   
  4. could break through." He laughed.       
  5. "There's only one problem."             
  6.  
  7. There were seventeen people in the room:
  8. friends of Peter's like Rover and Shem, 
  9. Wynders and Shelley and Scottie and     
  10. Jimmy Radix. Finally there was Rover's  
  11. current companion, an Asian girl with a 
  12. keratin adaptation that gave her otter  
  13. fur instead of hair. She was the one who
  14. finally asked, "What's the one problem, 
  15. Peter?"                                 
  16.  
  17. "The problem, Larin, is that it seems it
  18. would take the entire energy output of  
  19. the sun for several days concentrated   
  20. into a few hundred milliseconds.        
  21. Unfortunately such power is not         
  22. available locally." This remark was     
  23. greeted by a smattering of laughter.    
  24.  
  25. "You do know that what you're suggesting
  26. is probably not going to be appreciated 
  27. by Intercorp?" This was the girl with   
  28. otter fur. "My father's ENC, you know." 
  29.  
  30. "Your father's a cop?" Shem asked.      
  31.  
  32. "Well, not really. He's a system        
  33. surrogate. Someone has to keep the      
  34. simulations honest."                    
  35.  
  36. "You don't have to defend him," Shem    
  37. told her. "He can't help it. Besides,   
  38. we're not doing anything illegal--unless
  39. there's a law against thinking."        
  40.  
  41. "No," she said shortly. "That's not it. 
  42. The Elite Neutralization Corp watches   
  43. out for dangerous new technologies,     
  44. though. I hear about this stuff at home,
  45. you know. My father talks, at dinner    
  46. sometimes, about things he overhears    
  47. when he's on the system."               
  48.  
  49. "Look," Rover said. "there's nothing    
  50. here. We don't have a new technology,   
  51. and even if we did, we'd need a power   
  52. source that doesn't exist, so they don't
  53. have to worry, right."                  
  54.  
  55. "Nonetheless," Peter said, "I think I'll
  56. encrypt these meetings. No sense        
  57. alarming the ENC over nothing." He      
  58. gestured at the slowly rotating holo    
  59. shape in the air beside him. "This model
  60. represents a configuration of the       
  61. particle flow in a quantum              
  62. transformation. On a macro level it     
  63. represents a hypnagogic state. I've been
  64. having some experience with this lately,
  65. and this is the best model I've been    
  66. able to devise. It is consistent with   
  67. the psion equations as far as I can     
  68. tell. The Northwestern University       
  69. cruncher has run all the math for me,   
  70. and it's probable to twelve places. Of  
  71. course, because the effect is quantum,  
  72. nothing is certain."

  74. There was another laugh at this joke.   
  75. "Nothing is certain," someone repeated. 
  76. "Heisenberg be praised." They drank the 
  77. Uncertainty Principle with their milk in
  78. the nursery.                            
  79.  
  80. "The only really dangerous part for us, 
  81. as far as ENC is concerned, is that     
  82. PsiLink is a proscribed database, and   
  83. I've found it necessary lately to, uh,  
  84. enter it. The model is really a         
  85. four-dimensional transform..."
